As a Power Quality Expert, it is important to have the right contacts in order to get the right information to specify an effective solution.  Here are a few of you important contacts and a list of questions that you may want to ask.

Get in contact with your Customer process Suppliers

So you have to solve a Power Quality problem for a specific load, either a variable speed drive, soft start or a power controller.  Refine your detective skills! Identify exactly where the compatibility issues is by getting the alarm information or a particular mis-operation. Is the drive tripping on low voltage, high voltage, frequency variation or the power controller does not produce constant power output.

Contact the company’s application engineer to discuss the mis-operations, chances are that this is not a new problem and there are out of the box solutions like a specific power controller for the customer’s application or a new trip settings for the motor drive or soft-start.

Know your Utility Engineer

Once you have determined the problem and the solutions, you need some information from the Utility Engineer.

For a problem concerning sags, swells or short interruptions, here is a list of questions you may want to ask:

  • What is the protection philosophy and setting for the line supplying your customer?
  • Is there a reclosure scheme, if so, ask what are the settings, this can make a big difference on your solution spec and cost?
  • In case of a permanent fault on the utility side, how much time does it take to transfer to the back-up, is it automatic or manual?

For a flicker problem, you may want to know:

  • What is the fault level at point of common coupling?
  • Is it possible to rearrange the supply to get a higher short circuit level?
  • What are the recommended levels at point of common coupling?

For a harmonic problem, here are the relevant questions:

  • What is the harmonic impedance at point of common coupling?
  • Is there other harmonic producing loads on the same feeder?
  • What are the recommended levels at point of common coupling?
